Arsenal will sit top of the Premier League table at Christmas after edging past Everton 1–0 on Saturday night, reclaiming the summit just hours after Manchester City had briefly moved into first place with their win over West Ham United.
The decisive moment came in the 26th minute when Viktor Gyökeres calmly converted from the penalty spot. The Swedish forward sent Everton goalkeeper the wrong way, drilling a right-footed effort into the bottom-left corner to give the Gunners a lead they would not relinquish.
Playing at Everton’s Hill Dickinson Stadium for the first time, Arsenal controlled large spells of the contest, showing composure and defensive solidity to see out a hard-fought victory. Everton pressed in the second half but were unable to break through a disciplined Arsenal back line.
The win marks back-to-back Premier League victories for Mikel Arteta’s side and underlines their consistency at the top end of the table as the festive period begins.
With the league business wrapped up for now, Arsenal’s focus shifts to cup action, as they return to north London for a Carabao Cup quarter-final clash against Crystal Palace, aiming to build further momentum before the Premier League resumes.
