Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca may struggle to receive backing from the club hierarchy after making comments that appeared to be directed at the ownership, according to former Manchester United and England striker Wayne Rooney.
Maresca described the period leading up to Chelsea’s Premier League victory over Everton as “the worst 48 hours” since taking charge, before refusing to clarify who his comments were aimed at.
‘Calculated remarks’ raise concerns
Rooney suggested the Italian manager’s words were not accidental and were intended to send a message.
“He knew exactly what he was saying and who it was aimed at,” Rooney said.
“The board and owners will understand that those comments were directed towards them.”
Results add to pressure
Chelsea currently sit fourth in the Premier League but had taken just two points from their previous three matches before the Everton win. That run also included a defeat in European competition, increasing scrutiny around performances.
Despite lifting two trophies under Maresca, recent results have placed added focus on the club’s direction and leadership.
Respect for ownership is key
Rooney believes public criticism can damage a manager’s position, particularly at a club with high expectations.
“You have to respect the owners of a football club. They employ you,” he said.
“Going public like that doesn’t help your situation.”
Protection now unlikely
Rooney questioned whether Maresca acted due to internal uncertainty but warned that speaking out could reduce support if results decline.
“He doesn’t seem like someone who will backtrack,” Rooney added.
“If results dip again, it will be very hard for the club to come out and protect him.”
