Australia : Australia’s most celebrated swimmer, Ian Thorpe, is set to surprise the sports world again — but this time not in a swimming pool. The 43-year-old Olympic legend has taken a bold step into offshore sailing, joining the crew of LawConnect to compete in the 80th Sydney to Hobart yacht race.
Thorpe’s return to competitive waters begins not in the lanes of a pool but on the open sea, with his first event being the Cabbage Tree Island race, a challenging offshore test ahead of the main Sydney to Hobart race that kicks off on Boxing Day.
Thorpe described the challenge as very different from his life in the pool. Although he has spent his entire life near water, this new adventure promises fresh mental and physical tests, pushing him in ways he hasn’t experienced since his elite swimming days.
What makes this move even more compelling is how Thorpe embraces growth long after retirement. Having already secured his place in Olympic history with multiple gold medals early in his career, he now sees this ocean race as a chance to learn, grow, and be part of another iconic Australian sporting tradition.
And while many remember him for his feats in Sydney and Athens — where he became one of Australia’s most successful Olympians — this new chapter reminds fans that Thorpe’s competitive spirit still thrives, even far from the swimming blocks.
