Brisbane, Australia : England face an uphill battle in the 2025–26 Ashes series in Australia, and former England wicketkeeper Matt Prior says that Jamie Smith must be the team’s “heartbeat” if the tourists are to spark a revival.
England have struggled in the early stages of the Ashes, with Australia taking a strong lead in the five-match series. Prior, speaking in commentary and analysis, stressed that Smith — England’s wicketkeeper and middle-order bat — needs to rediscover his best form and provide energy and consistency for his team.
England’s performance so far has been mixed, with the tourists trailing in the series and needing key players to step up. Prior believes Smith’s influence, both with the gloves and with the bat, could be crucial in shifting momentum.
The Ashes contest, which runs across Australia from 21 November 2025 to 8 January 2026, represents one of cricket’s fiercest rivalries, and England will be hoping that leadership from within — including players like Smith — can help them recover later in the tour.
