Aryna Sabalenka has dismissed concerns that her upcoming ‘Battle of the Sexes’-style exhibition match against Nick Kyrgios could damage women’s tennis.
The women’s world number one will face the 2022 Wimbledon finalist on 28 December in Dubai, with the event broadcast live on the BBC.
Bold Subhead: Sabalenka Confident About the Event
Some critics argue the match could belittle the women’s game if Sabalenka loses. The 27-year-old disagrees.
“I don’t agree,” she told BBC Sport. “We’re there to have fun and bring great tennis. Whoever wins, wins.” She added that the match is not about physical comparisons but about showcasing the sport: “This event is only going to help bring women’s tennis to a higher level.”
Bold Subhead: Kyrgios’ Form and the Event’s Purpose
Kyrgios, ranked 672 after a long injury layoff, has played only five matches this year. Many observers question what Sabalenka stands to gain. But the idea came from their shared agent Stuart Duguid, who insists money is not the driving factor.
Bold Subhead: Why the Exhibition Divides Opinion
The concept echoes the iconic 1973 Billie Jean King vs Bobby Riggs match, a landmark moment for gender equality. Although women’s tennis today is commercially strong, Sabalenka and Kyrgios believe the Dubai showdown will attract new fans with added entertainment and star power.
Bold Subhead: Kyrgios Addresses Criticism
Kyrgios, who has faced criticism for past behaviour and comments, says he has matured. “You change,” he said. “I’m not going to say I’m an amazing role model, but I’m definitely more mature now.”
He insists he is not worried about losing: “I’ve lost tennis matches before. It’s not a big deal.”
Kyrgios also sees the match as useful preparation for a full return to the tour in 2026, as he continues recovering from knee and wrist injuries.
