Former world No.4 Jelena Dokic has shared an emotional and encouraging health update, confirming she has undergone surgery to remove a large fibroid from her uterus and will be easing back into daily life as she recovers.
Posting from her hospital bed on social media, the Australian tennis great reassured fans that the procedure was successful and her recovery is progressing well.
Successful Surgery and a Message of Strength
Dokic revealed she had undergone surgery to remove a non-cancerous growth and thanked her supporters for the outpouring of love.
“Just had my surgery to remove a large fibroid and it all went well,” she wrote.
“I will be taking it slow for a bit but will be back up on my feet very soon.”
Though still feeling sore from the incisions, Dokic remained upbeat as she began her recovery.
Raising Awareness About Women’s Health
Using the moment to highlight an often overlooked issue, Dokic spoke candidly about fibroids and the varying impact they can have on women.
“Some women it will not affect at all and some will have a lot of pain and bleeding depending on where it is and how big it is,” she explained.
She strongly encouraged women to prioritise regular medical check-ups, stressing the importance of listening to their bodies.
“Please get your scans, regular gynaecological check-ups and if anything ever feels off or painful, don’t dismiss it and go to your doctor.”
A Call to Advocate for Personal Health
Dokic also urged women to stand firm when it comes to their health, acknowledging that reproductive issues can sometimes be dismissed.
“Always advocate for your health no matter what. Get different opinions, get the scans and ultrasounds for your own safety, health, prevention and treatment — even if you are told that you ‘don’t need to’.”
Her message struck a powerful chord with followers across the sporting and health communities.
Gratitude for Medical Team and Loved Ones
Dokic expressed deep gratitude to the medical staff at Frances Perry House at the Royal Women’s Hospital in Melbourne, calling the care she received “incredible”.
“Legends that don’t get enough credit and spotlight and absolutely should,” she wrote.
She also thanked her close circle for their unwavering support.
“A big thank you to my people who called, sent messages, flowers and are here for me. You know who you are. Love you all.”
Recovery With Purpose
While Dokic takes time to recover physically, her message resonated far beyond sport — turning a personal health challenge into a powerful reminder about awareness, early detection and self-advocacy.
Her openness continues to inspire, proving once again that her impact stretches well beyond the tennis court.
