In a milestone moment for Indian chess, 19-year-old prodigy R. Praggnanandhaa has officially secured qualification for the 2026 Candidates Tournament, the gateway to the World Chess Championship. The confirmation followed his triumphant victory on the FIDE Circuit 2025, capping off a year of remarkable consistency and elite-level performances.
Praggnanandhaa — fondly known worldwide as ‘Pragg’ — hinted earlier at his imminent qualification after finishing joint winner at the London Chess Classic 2025 Open. The official announcement arrived on Monday, with the rising star expressing his excitement through a celebratory social media message.
“A long year on the FIDE Circuit, and I’m grateful to earn a place in the 2026 Candidates. Thank you for all the constant support,” he posted on X.
A Year of Breakthroughs
2025 has undoubtedly been a career-defining year for the Chennai-born grandmaster. His FIDE Circuit dominance included titles at Tata Steel Masters, Superbet Chess Classic Romania, UzChess Cup Masters, London Chess Classic Open
He also registered two valuable runner-up finishes at the Stepan Avagyan Memorial and the 12th Sinquefield Cup, further boosting his Circuit tally.
The achievement is especially significant following a rare setback earlier in the year, when Pragg exited the FIDE World Cup 2025 in the fourth round after a tense tie-break defeat to Russia’s Daniil Dubov. His commanding rebound across subsequent tournaments has now propelled him to the grandest stage in classical chess.
Road to the Crown
The 2026 Candidates Tournament will be held from March 28 to April 16, 2026, at a luxury venue in Cyprus. The competition features a demanding 14-round double round-robin format and a minimum prize fund of €1 million, with the winner pocketing at least €70,000 and — more importantly — the right to challenge reigning World Champion D. Gukesh in November 2026.
Praggnanandhaa joins a formidable lineup that already includes: Fabiano Caruana, Anish Giri, Matthias Blübaum Javokhir Sindarov, Wei Yi, Andrey Esipenko.
The final eighth spot remains undecided, intensifying the anticipation.
