At the most awaited SSI Sports Science Conclave 2025, Senior Football Administrator and former General Secretary of AIFF Shaji Prabhakaran delivered a reality check on the state of Indian football, asserting that the country’s biggest challenge is not talent, but governance. Speaking during the session on “AI in Sports,” he stressed that transparency, grassroots data, and technology-driven accountability are the only way forward to rebuild trust, attract sustainable investment, and unlock India’s true footballing potential.
Governance Is the Core Crisis
Shaji made it clear that the biggest barrier holding Indian football back is poor governance. Despite India’s massive population of 1.4 billion, the national team remains ranked 142 in the world — a gap that reflects systemic issues rather than lack of players or passion. He pointed out that weak vision, limited sponsorship, low viewership, and inadequate coaching are all consequences of broken governance.
AI as the Tool for Transparency
Highlighting the true power of Artificial Intelligence, Shaji said AI can transform how sports organisations function by ensuring complete financial transparency. From sponsorship inflows to daily expenditure, AI can track every rupee in real time. This removes the need for traditional audits and, most importantly, restores trust. Once spending becomes transparent, belief in the system grows — and with it, long-term investment and stability.
Data Must Begin at the Grassroots
Shaji underlined that AI can only be effective if it is supported by strong grassroots data. Player development, scouting, performance tracking, and injury management all depend on reliable data collected from the foundation level. Without structured grassroots systems, even the best technology cannot deliver results.

Closing his address, Shaji delivered a powerful message beyond sport: AI must now be integrated into both personal and professional life.
