Most children dream of traditional careers—doctors, engineers, lawyers. But Mohit Mediratta always knew he was destined for sport. Gifted, disciplined, and quick to absorb new skills, he excelled early in cricket, representing Kenya’s Under-15 team at just 13. But his heart belonged elsewhere: on the golf course.
Inspired by watching Tiger Woods sink birdies with impossible precision, Mohit spent his childhood balancing academics, cricket training, and hours of golf practice. His father played a quiet but influential role—dropping Mohit and his brother at the golf course every morning during school holidays and picking them up at dusk.
A Defining Fork in the Road
At 15, Mohit faced a life-changing decision:
-
Join Kenya’s U-16 cricket squad, or
-
Captain the country at the All-Africa Junior Golf Tour in South Africa.
He chose golf—and never looked back.
As he began competing more regularly, the possibility of a professional career slowly became real. But the path, like for many African athletes, was steep. Golf is expensive, travel is demanding, and opportunities are limited.
Safaricom Steps In — And Everything Changes
The turning point came when Safaricom offered Mediratta a sponsorship.
With the financial burden lifted, Mohit began competing in higher-tier tournaments such as the Magical Kenya Open and the PGK Equator Tour. The support provided more than money—it offered belonging.
“Golf can get very lonely. Safaricom gave me a community. Being part of a team helps our mental health,”

The sponsorship freed him to focus fully on performance, sharpening his game and building consistency.
A Contender on the Road to the 2028 Olympics
Mohit has emerged as one of the standout players in the PGK Equator Tour, which doubles as a qualification pathway to the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics.
-
5th Leg (Nakuru): Finished 7th overall
-
6th Leg (Diani): Played through illness, still fought to remain competitive
Now preparing for the 7th leg at his home course, Sigona, he’s driven to regain momentum.
“It’s always special to play at home. You know every corner of the course.”
Alongside Safaricom-sponsored teammates Mutahi Kibugu, Sammy Njoroge, and Mathew Wahome, Mohit is helping elevate the profile of Kenyan golf.
A Golfer, Entrepreneur and Role Model
Off the course, Mohit also runs his own golf equipment brand, Callaway, spends time with family, and maintains a fitness routine that enhances his game.
Tiger Woods was the figure who broke racial stereotypes and inspired his journey. Now Mohit hopes to pay that inspiration forward.
“If I can inspire kids to pick up a golf club—or pursue any dream—my work is done.”
A Case Study in Why Corporate Support Matters
Mohit’s progress underscores an important truth:
African sporting talent can flourish—but only when backed by consistent corporate investment.
He credits Safaricom for enabling him and other golfers on the PGK Tour to build sustainable careers. With more corporates stepping in, he believes Kenya can produce a stronger pipeline of professionals and elevate the sport’s popularity nationwide.
A Future Kenya Can Build On
Mohit Mediratta’s story is not just about one athlete’s ambition. It mirrors the evolution of Kenyan golf itself—where raw talent meets structured development and strong institutional support.
If he achieves his dream of representing Kenya at the 2028 Olympics, he will stand as a symbol of what is possible when passion, perseverance, and corporate backing converge.
