Iran Soccer Federation Chief Signals Uncertainty Over 2026 World Cup Plans
The president of Iran’s soccer federation has cast serious doubt on the national team’s participation in the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico following recent military strikes by the United States and Israel on Iranian territory. Mehdi Taj told local media that after the attacks, it is “far from” Iran’s expectations to look toward the World Cup with hope, and senior sports officials will evaluate whether the team can still travel to and compete in the tournament.
Escalating Geopolitical Crisis Poses Major Challenges
The U.S. and Israeli strikes on Iran have raised tensions across the Middle East and triggered a conflict that has disrupted normal life and sporting activities in the country. Iran, which secured its place in the 2026 World Cup by topping its Asian qualifying group, was drawn into Group G alongside New Zealand, Belgium and Egypt, with matches scheduled in Los Angeles and Seattle in June. However, with heightened security concerns and an already restrictive U.S. visa regime for Iranian citizens, Tehran’s ability to participate has become increasingly uncertain.
FIFA Monitoring Situation But No Decision Yet
FIFA has said it is closely monitoring developments surrounding Iran’s potential participation but has not provided an official position on the matter. The governing body is hoping to ensure that all qualified teams can compete safely, though it may face logistical and political hurdles if Iran ultimately withdraws. Any withdrawal could also trigger discussions within FIFA about possible replacements, though no formal steps have been announced.
Timing And Impact On Preparation
The World Cup, scheduled from June 11 to July 19, will be hosted across the United States, Canada and Mexico. Iran’s preparations for the tournament are now overshadowed by national concerns, with officials indicating that football is not a priority amid ongoing hostilities. Players and staff may face additional travel and security complications if participation is pursued.
