Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has rarely gone without Moises Caicedo, selecting him in 50 of his 51 Premier League games. But after the Ecuadorian’s red card against Arsenal, the Blues must cope without him for three matches – against Leeds, Bournemouth and Everton. Maresca even placed Caicedo on the same level of importance as Cole Palmer, saying Chelsea are “a better team” with both players on the pitch.
A Season Built Around His Influence
Caicedo has been central to Chelsea’s structure, winning both the players’ and fans’ player of the season awards last year. Statistically, he has been one of Europe’s best defensive midfielders, making a league-high 28 tackles and 18 interceptions. His defensive output accounts for nearly a quarter of Chelsea’s total tackles – one of the highest ratios Opta has ever recorded.
Santos Set to Step In
Andrey Santos is expected to replace Caicedo, with Maresca confident the 21-year-old is “ready” to play as a number six. Santos impressed during his loan at Strasbourg and has already shown promise in deeper and advanced midfield roles. With Romeo Lavia and Dario Essugo injured and Enzo Fernández less suited to the physical demands, Santos becomes Chelsea’s most natural option.
Other Makeshift Options Available
If needed, Maresca can shift defenders into midfield. Reece James has operated alongside Caicedo before and delivered a man-of-the-match display against Arsenal, though he is likely to be rested for Leeds. Malo Gusto and Josh Acheampong also offer emergency cover.
Ban Could Help Caicedo Recover
Caicedo has been managing a knee issue and is understood to be fatigued by his heavy workload for club and country. Maresca admitted the suspension may give the 24-year-old valuable recovery time before Chelsea’s Champions League match against Atalanta next week. Despite the short-term setback, the enforced break could allow Caicedo to regain fitness for the busy festive period.
