Manchester City remain in advanced discussions with Chelsea over the appointment of Enzo Maresca as the club’s next manager following Pep Guardiola’s decision to step down.
Guardiola announced last month that he would leave the Etihad Stadium after a decade in charge, ending one of the most successful managerial eras in football. Since then, City have accelerated their search for a successor, with Maresca emerging as the preferred candidate.
The Italian coach is understood to be keen on returning to Manchester, where he previously worked as part of Guardiola’s coaching staff during City’s historic Treble-winning campaign in 2022-23.
Compensation Talks Ongoing
While both parties are interested in completing a deal, negotiations between Manchester City and Chelsea are continuing over compensation.
Maresca left Stamford Bridge in January despite having a contract that was due to run until 2029. Chelsea believe they are entitled to compensation and expect City to reach an agreement before any appointment can be finalised.
The exact figure being discussed has not been revealed, although talks are said to be progressing.
Chelsea have also explored their legal options as they seek a settlement for the early termination of Maresca’s long-term contract.
Strong City Connection
Maresca is viewed as an ideal candidate because of his familiarity with Manchester City’s football philosophy and internal structure.
Before moving into senior management, he spent time coaching within City’s academy before joining Guardiola’s first-team staff. His role during the Treble-winning season enhanced his reputation as one of Europe’s brightest young coaches.
Following his departure from City, Maresca took charge of Leicester City and guided them back to the Premier League at the first attempt.
His success continued at Chelsea, where he helped the club win the Club World Cup and UEFA Conference League during his spell in charge.
Chelsea Exit Not Without Challenges
Despite those achievements, Maresca’s relationship with Chelsea’s hierarchy reportedly became strained during the latter stages of his tenure.
Reports suggest differences over transfer policy, team selection and medical decisions contributed to growing tensions behind the scenes. Chelsea sources also claim the club became aware of City’s interest in Maresca months before Guardiola’s departure was announced.
However, the Italian remained popular within the dressing room and was respected by many players and staff members.
Chelsea believe the instability following his departure played a role in the club’s struggles during the remainder of the season.
City Pursuing Anderson
Manchester City are also active in the transfer market as they prepare for a new era.
The club recently had an opening offer rejected for Nottingham Forest midfielder Elliot Anderson but remain determined to sign the England international.
Anderson has become City’s primary midfield target following the departure of long-serving captain Bernardo Silva.
Forest are reportedly demanding a record fee for a British player, potentially exceeding the £105 million Arsenal paid for Declan Rice in 2023.
The 23-year-old is currently with England at the World Cup, although manager Thomas Tuchel has confirmed players will be permitted to complete transfer negotiations if required.
Decision Expected Soon
City are eager to complete their managerial appointment as soon as possible to allow preparations for the new season to begin.
With his understanding of the club, experience under Guardiola and growing managerial credentials, Maresca remains the leading contender to take charge at the Etihad Stadium.
While compensation discussions continue, all signs point towards the Italian becoming the man tasked with leading Manchester City into the post-Guardiola era.
