Former Duke stars Cooper Flagg and Kon Knueppel have etched their names into NBA history, becoming the first draftees from the same school to be named Rookies of the Month in the same month. Flagg earned the honor as the West Rookie of the Month, while Knueppel claimed the East.
Their rookie seasons have been strikingly similar in impact. Knueppel is averaging 19.9 points, 6.3 rebounds, and 3.3 assists per game, while Flagg is posting 17.8 points, 6.7 rebounds, and 3.7 assists. While Knueppel got off to a faster start, Flagg has quickly found his rhythm, especially after being asked to step into the demanding role of point guard for the Dallas Mavericks from Day 1.
Flagg’s breakout performances include a 35-point, 8-rebound, 2-assist, 3-steal outing against the Los Angeles Clippers — making him the youngest player to score 35 points in an NBA game — and a 24-point, 8-rebound effort against Denver. Meanwhile, Knueppel has impressed the league with his maturity and polished game, already setting a record for most three-pointers made in his first 20 games while shooting 40% from beyond the arc. His performances have sparked conversations about the Charlotte Hornets potentially building around him.
Both players, who were roommates at Duke, are now frontrunners for the NBA Rookie of the Year award. This historic achievement also underscores Duke’s recruiting power. With talents like Cameron Boozer emerging as potential NCAA National Player of the Year candidates and Jared McCain showing brilliance before his injury last season, Duke continues to set the standard for producing elite NBA-ready talent.
