A Life-Changing 24 Hours
Blake Butera’s life changed forever in one extraordinary day. After welcoming his first daughter, Blair Margaux Butera, he discovered he had also been named the Washington Nationals’ new manager. At 33, Butera became the youngest major league manager in more than half a century, a momentous professional and personal milestone achieved simultaneously.
Balancing Dreams and Family
Before interviewing for the prestigious role, Butera consulted his wife, Caroline Margolis. “Is this something we can do right now?” he asked. Margolis reassured him: “We’ll figure it out, we always do.” Butera, previously the Tampa Bay Rays’ senior director of player development, had long aspired to manage in the majors, and now he was ready to step into the dugout without compromising family priorities.
A Supportive Process
Nationals GM Paul Toboni coordinated carefully with the Rays, understanding the timing of the impending birth. “Your wife and your soon-to-be baby are first and foremost,” Toboni told Butera. The process moved forward with sensitivity, allowing Butera and Margolis to focus on family while finalizing the contract.
Contracts, Cameras, and a New Chapter
On October 30, the announcement went live on ESPN while Blair was being born. Once in the recovery room, Butera signed his contract, marking the start of a new chapter as both a father and a major league manager. “All right, we’re doing this?” he asked his wife, sealing both milestones together.
Family First, Always
Two weeks later, the Nationals introduced Butera in a family-centered press conference. Baby Blair received her first custom Nationals jersey, and the couple reflected on balancing baseball’s demands with family life. Margolis shared, “That’s what you sign up for. Supporting the passion and the dream is everything.”
Blake and Caroline are embracing this whirlwind, hopeful that Blair will one day understand the extraordinary start to her life—born into a family deeply rooted in the game of baseball.
