The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has provided an important update on the recovery of Indian captain Shubman Gill, who suffered a neck injury during the first Test against South Africa in Kolkata. The injury, which occurred on Day 2, forced Gill off the field and raised concerns about his availability for the series decider.
According to the BCCI, the 26-year-old has been responding positively to medical treatment. Gill will travel with the squad to Guwahati on November 19, where the second and final Test of the series is scheduled to be played. The medical team will continue to monitor him closely, and a final call on his participation in the match — beginning Saturday, November 22 — will be made after further assessment.
Gill’s injury comes at a difficult juncture for India. The team suffered a shock defeat in Kolkata, allowing South Africa to celebrate their first Test victory on Indian soil since 2010. The loss has shaken up the ICC World Test Championship standings as well — the reigning champions, India, have slipped to fourth place, while South Africa have climbed to second.
With the series now on the line, all eyes shift to the ACA Stadium in Guwahati, where India will look to bounce back and level the contest. Gill’s potential availability could play a crucial role in India’s push to regain momentum.
As the squad regroups, the big question remains: Will Shubman Gill be fit in time to lead India in the must-win Test?
