Jessica Pegula produced a remarkable comeback to defeat three-time defending champion Aryna Sabalenka 2‑6, 6‑4, 7‑6 (7‑2) in an epic Wuhan Open semi-final. Sabalenka had looked in command, breaking twice to lead 5‑2 in the deciding set, but the 31-year-old American clawed back to win four consecutive games and eventually take the tie-break.

“For what I did in the tie-break, I’m just really proud of myself,” Pegula said. “I’ve played so much tennis the last few weeks, so many three-set matches, but I feel like I’m very tough right now and I’m just using that feeling as best as I can.”

Sabalenka’s Winning Streak Snapped

The world No. 1 entered Wuhan on a 20-match winning streak at the tournament, having won the title in each of the past three editions. Despite saving two match points, Sabalenka couldn’t withstand Pegula’s late surge and saw her dominance at the Chinese Open come to an end.

Coco Gauff Reaches Final With Straight-Set Win

Earlier, French Open champion Coco Gauff overcame Italian seventh seed Jasmine Paolini 6‑4, 6‑3 to reach her first final since Roland Garros in June. The 21-year-old faced a challenging match featuring 11 consecutive breaks of serve, struggled with five breaks against and seven double faults, but held firm to advance.

“I’m really happy with how I played today. It was tough, especially playing on the serve, but I did what I needed to do to get through,” Gauff said. “Sabalenka and Pegula are great players, and I’ve lost to them both before. But overall, I’m just going to focus on my side of the court and try to control the things I can control.”

Final Showdown Set

With Pegula’s stunning semi-final victory and Gauff’s steady performance, the Wuhan Open final promises a high-stakes clash between the determined American duo, each bringing contrasting styles and momentum into the championship match.
