Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) have strengthened their coaching staff with the addition of New Zealand’s ace pacer Tim Southee as the team’s new bowling coach ahead of the IPL 2026 season.
Southee, a veteran of over 150 Test matches and a proven match-winner in limited-overs cricket, brings a wealth of international experience to KKR’s pace attack. He has also played in the IPL before, representing franchises like Chennai Super Kings, Rajasthan Royals, Mumbai Indians, and KKR itself, taking 47 wickets in 54 matches. His firsthand IPL experience is expected to help him mentor both senior fast bowlers and young emerging talents.
This appointment follows Shane Watson’s earlier induction as KKR’s assistant coach. While Watson focuses on all-rounder development and tactical planning, Southee’s role will be central to building a disciplined and potent bowling unit.
Speaking about his appointment, Southee said, “I’m excited to join KKR and work with some of the best talent in the IPL. My goal is to help the bowlers perform consistently and adapt to high-pressure situations.”
Under the guidance of head coach Abhishek Nayar, KKR have been actively preparing for the 2026 season, with early training camps focusing on fitness, skills, and team strategy. The franchise has also been scouting emerging domestic talent to strengthen their squad and is planning pre-season practice matches to fine-tune combinations. With Nayar leading the team and experienced coaches like Watson and Southee on board, KKR aims to start the season with a well-drilled and balanced side.
KKR’s management hopes that with this strengthened coaching lineup, the franchise can make a strong push in IPL 2026 and challenge for the title. Fans will be eager to see how Southee’s expertise, combined with his previous IPL experience, transforms the team’s bowling department in the upcoming season.
