Bhubaneswar: Viswanathan Anand has voiced strong disappointment over the recent conduct of former World Champion Vladimir Kramnik, saying the Russian grandmaster’s public accusations surrounding online cheating have created unnecessary discord within the global chess community.
Speaking in response to Kramnik’s series of open statements and allegations against various players, Anand said he expected more restraint from someone of Kramnik’s stature. “I am quite disappointed with how he has behaved,” Anand said, noting that concerns about fair play should be raised responsibly and through established channels.
Kramnik has in recent months published multiple documents and analyses suggesting irregularities in online games played by several top players. His comments have sparked significant debate, drawing both support and criticism from players, officials, and fans. Critics argue that many of his allegations lack firm evidence and risk damaging reputations.
Anand emphasized that while fair-play issues are real and must be addressed, the manner in which they are discussed matters. “These kinds of public accusations can be very harmful. They create an atmosphere of suspicion and put unnecessary pressure on players,” he said. He added that young and upcoming talents may feel especially targeted by sweeping statements that question the integrity of broad groups of competitors.
The discussion comes at a time when online chess has grown substantially, prompting federations and platforms to strengthen anti-cheating measures. Despite these changes, the community remains divided on how transparent, strict, and public enforcement should be.
With two of the sport’s greatest champions on opposite sides of this debate, many in the chess world are hoping for mediation and more measured conversations going forward. For now, Anand’s remarks underline the need for professionalism, evidence-based dialogue, and respect as the sport navigates one of its most contentious modern issues.
