Manchester City cruised to a 4-1 victory over Borussia Dortmund in the UEFA Champions League 2025/26 season on Matchday 4. Phil Foden was the star of the night, scoring two goals. Whereas, the in-form Erling Haaland added to his tally as he entered record books.
A look at the match highlights
The match started slowly for City, but they broke the deadlock in the 22nd minute. Midfielder Tijjani Reijnders found Foden in space, who turned and shot accurately from 25 yards out. Soon after, Haaland scored his obligatory goal against his former club with a powerful shot from 10 yards out that beat Gregor Kobel.
The second half started with Savinho forcing a save from Kobel. Foden then doubled City’s lead with a goal similar to his first one, bringing his Champions League tally to 20.
Dortmund managed to pull one back through a quickly taken free-kick that was side-footed in by Waldemar Anton. However, Rayan Cherki sealed the win with a goal in stoppage time. Cherki scored after running at the visitors and hitting a shot from just inside the box that deflected off Emre Can and into the net.
Foden, Haaland and Silva attain these feats
As per Opta, since the start of the 2023/24 season, Foden has netted 11 long-range goals for Manchester City across all competitions—the most by any player for a Premier League club in that period.
Haaland became the first player to score in five consecutive Champions League games for three different teams: Red Bull Salzburg, Dortmund, and Man City.
Haaland now owns 54 Champions League goals from 52 appearances. As many as 31 of his goals have come for Man City in the UCL. This was Haaland’s 18th goal of the season from 14 appearances across all competitions.
Bernardo Silva made his 100th UEFA Champions League appearance. Silva became only the fourth Portuguese player to reach the milestone. He has joined Cristiano Ronaldo (183), Pepe (120), and Luis Figo (103).
Where do the two teams stand?
Pep Guardiola’s Man City remain unbeaten this season in the Champions League. They are currently placed 4th with 10 points (W3 D1). Dortmund are 14th with 7 points in their kitty. This was their first defeat this season in the UCL.
Comments from Guardiola on Foden after his side’s win
Guardiola, speaking to TNT Sports after his side’s win praised Foden and felt he is back to his best.
“I would say he is already there [back to his best form]. He does not need to get closer. He is already there. It is true we have missed goals and he got two incredible goals. How many times have we seen that from Phil, right? How many times? The generosity with the effort but also with the quality in the final third. We missed it a lot. I’m happy three more players scored goals and not just Erling Haaland,” the Spaniard said.
He also backed Foden to reclaim his England spot.
“Thomas [Tuchel] knows perfectly how good Phil is and I’m sure he will do the best for your country.”
