The Miami Heat and Portland Trail Blazers both recorded dominant wins in their first NBA games since high-profile arrests shook their teams. Guard Terry Rozier of the Heat and Blazers coach Chauncey Billups were detained as part of an FBI investigation into alleged illegal gambling, though both deny any wrongdoing.
Miami Heat Dominate Memphis
Miami stormed to a 146-114 victory over the Memphis Grizzlies, putting up 86 points in the first half alone to lead by 39 at halftime — the largest half-time advantage in the franchise’s 37-year history. Bam Adebayo led the way with 24 points and showed solidarity with Rozier. “We stand behind him. Full support. That’s our brother at the end of the day,” Adebayo said. Coach Erik Spoelstra echoed the sentiment, praising Rozier’s positive impact on the locker room.
Trail Blazers Win Under Interim Coach
Portland also emerged victorious for the first time since the arrests, with interim coach Tiago Splitter guiding the team to a 139-119 win over the Golden State Warriors. “We all had great experiences with Chauncey and how he coached. We’re thinking of him and his family, but we have a job to do,” Splitter said.
NBA Reacts to Arrests
NBA commissioner Adam Silver expressed being “deeply disturbed” by the events but stressed that the integrity of the league remains a priority. Silver clarified that a previous investigation into Rozier’s March 2023 betting found nothing untoward, noting the federal indictment does not imply guilt and highlighting the balance between protecting rights and investigating allegations.
