The NBA season’s opening night featured Victor Wembanyama leading the San Antonio Spurs past Cooper Flagg and the Dallas Mavericks, 125-92.
Wembanyama, the 7-foot-4 French phenom and No. 1 pick in the 2023 draft, posted 40 points, 15 rebounds, and 3 blocks in just 30 minutes, showing why he is already considered a generational talent. His combination of length, ball-handling, three-point shooting, and defensive dominance made life difficult for the young Mavericks star.
Flagg, the first overall pick in 2025, managed 10 points and 10 rebounds, a modest debut that highlighted the learning curve ahead.
“We needed to make a statement. We’re all tired of losing,” Wembanyama said postgame.
Historic Rookie Debut for Edgecombe
Not all rookies struggled. VJ Edgecombe, the 3rd overall pick, had a record-breaking debut with the Philadelphia 76ers, scoring 34 points in a narrow 117-116 victory over the Boston Celtics.
Edgecombe’s 34 points are the third most ever by a rookie in their first NBA game, behind only Wilt Chamberlain (43 in 1959) and Frank Selvy (35 in 1954). His efficient scoring and confidence provided a glimpse of a bright future for the 20-year-old guard.
Tyrese Maxey also shone with 40 points, while Joel Embiid contributed only 4 points in 20 minutes. Boston played without Jayson Tatum, sidelined with a torn Achilles tendon.

On the court, however, Giannis Antetokounmpo led Milwaukee to a 133-120 win over the Washington Wizards, posting 37 points, 14 rebounds, and 5 assists in 27 minutes, proving why he remains one of the league’s most dominant forces.
“To get that type of recognition from the city meant the world to me,” Middleton said.
