Rishabh Pant is all set to make his long-awaited return to competitive cricket later this month. The dynamic wicketkeeper-batter, who fractured his foot during the fourth Test against England in Manchester in July, has fully recovered and will lead India A against South Africa A in two four-day matches beginning October 30.
The games, scheduled at the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence, will serve as warm-up fixtures ahead of India’s Test series against South Africa starting November 14.
Pant’s return marks the end of a frustrating three-month recovery period, during which he missed the Asia Cup, the home Tests against West Indies, and the ongoing tour of Australia.
Two Squads, One Goal: Testing India’s Bench Strength
The BCCI has named two slightly different squads under Pant’s captaincy.
In the first match, Sai Sudharsan, N Jagdeesan, Devdutt Padikkal, and Rajat Patidar will headline a youthful lineup.
The second fixture, starting November 6, will feature experienced campaigners including KL Rahul, Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, and Akash Deep, giving India’s selectors a close look at the Test hopefuls.
Meanwhile, India’s senior men’s team remains on duty in Australia for the limited-overs leg of their tour.
The Long Road Back
Pant’s injury came from a brutal yorker by Chris Woakes during the Manchester Test. Despite sustaining a fracture, the southpaw battled on to complete a valiant half-century before being ruled out of subsequent matches.
Throughout his rehab, Pant shared glimpses of his struggle and determination on social media, often expressing impatience with the slow recovery process. Under BCCI’s medical supervision, his commitment has finally borne fruit.
“He’s worked incredibly hard through his rehab. His return brings balance and energy to the team,” said a senior BCCI official.
Eyes on South Africa Series
Pant’s return could not have been better timed. With the Test series against the reigning world champions South Africa looming large, the wicketkeeper-batter is expected to reclaim his spot in the senior side.
If his form mirrors the heights he reached during the England series — including twin centuries at Headingley and fifties across the next three Tests — India will regain one of their most game-changing players.
