Team India fought valiantly but narrowly missed gold, finishing runners-up at the Sultan of Johor Cup 2025 after a 2–1 defeat to Australia in a gripping final in Malaysia.
Australia’s Ian Grobbelaar drew first blood in the 13th minute, only for India’s Anmol Ekka to respond swiftly with an equalizer in the 17th minute, setting up a tense halftime deadlock. However, Grobbelaar struck again in the 59th minute, sealing the win for Australia and denying India a historic title.
The result marks India’s fifth silver medal at the prestigious U-21 tournament. The young Indian side, which had claimed bronze in the previous two editions, showed resilience and tactical maturity throughout the campaign.
For Australia, the victory ended their streak of three consecutive final losses, including their 2022 defeat to India, making this triumph a long-awaited redemption.
Despite the heartbreak, India’s spirited performance reaffirms the team’s growing depth and promise ahead of future international challenges.
