Former England batter Robin Smith has died at the age of 62. Widely known by his nickname Judge, Smith was regarded as one of the toughest and most reliable batters of his generation. His death was confirmed on Tuesday, leaving the cricketing community in shock.
Impressive International Career
Smith represented England in 62 Test matches between 1988 and 1996, scoring 4,236 runs at an impressive average of 43.67. His Test career featured nine centuries, and he built a reputation for handling fast bowling with courage and skill. In one-day internationals, he played 71 matches and averaged 39.01, adding further value to England’s middle order during a competitive era.
County Stalwart for Hampshire
Born in South Africa, Smith chose to build his professional career in England and spent his entire county stint with Hampshire. He remained with the club for more than two decades, making his final appearance in August 2003.
Outstanding First-Class Record
Over a 22-year career, Smith scored 26,155 first-class runs at an average of 41.51. His consistency, technique and longevity continue to be remembered as hallmarks of a truly distinguished cricketing career.
