England striker Ollie Watkins has been ruled out of Tuesday’s World Cup qualifier against Latvia after picking up an injury in the 3-0 win over Wales last week.
The Aston Villa forward, who scored England’s second goal at Wembley, was substituted at half-time after colliding with the post while attempting to convert a cross. Although head coach Thomas Tuchel initially said Watkins was “OK,” the 29-year-old has now returned to his club for further assessment and will not travel to Riga.
Watkins has been a regular under Tuchel since making his England debut in 2021, scoring six goals in 20 appearances. However, his club form has been patchy this season, with only one goal in 10 matches for Villa.
Kane Expected to Return
Captain Harry Kane, who missed the Wales fixture due to a minor knock, trained with the squad on Monday and is expected to feature against Latvia. Tuchel earlier said he was “convinced” the Bayern Munich striker would be fit in time.
In Watkins’ absence, Anthony Gordon could once again move into a central attacking role after impressing in the second half against Wales. Marcus Rashford, currently on loan at Barcelona, is another option for the number nine position. Rashford has 18 goals for England — the most among active players after Kane.
England One Win Away from Qualification
England can seal qualification for the 2026 World Cup with two games to spare if they defeat Latvia at the Daugava Stadium in Riga. The Three Lions currently top Group C and remain unbeaten under Tuchel in the qualifying campaign.
Villa, meanwhile, will hope Watkins recovers in time for their Premier League clash against Tottenham on 19 October, their first fixture after the international break.
