Rohit Sharma, who took over the captaincy from Virat Kohli in 2021, boasts significant ODI records and is among the most successful Indian captains. He has now been replaced by Shubman Gill, who has already been appointed India’s Test captain and T20I vice-captain, and is set to lead the team in the upcoming Australia tour.
Key Achievements and Records
The 38-year-old batter led India in two consecutive ICC finals in this format—the Cricket World Cup 2023 and the Champions Trophy 2025—and secured the trophy in the latter tournament.
Rohit also captained India in two ODI Asia Cups, making India champions in both 2018 and 2023. Though not always formally considered the captain, he has been widely regarded as the true leader of Team India.
Rohit began leading the team in Virat Kohli’s absence and took over full-time captaincy across all formats from 2021. Overall, he captained India in 56 ODIs, winning 42 and losing 12, giving him an impressive winning percentage of 75%.
Uncertainty on 2027 World Cup
Rohit retired from T20I cricket after leading India to the 2024 World Cup title and later retired from Test cricket in April 2025 during the IPL. Now, age and fitness are key factors in his participation in the 2027 World Cup. To remain in contention, he will need to deliver consistent performances in this format.
