FC Goa began their AFC Champions League Two Group D campaign with a disappointing 0-2 defeat against Iraq’s Al Zawraa SC on Wednesday, despite a spirited display in front of home supporters.
Early scare for Goa
The Gaurs almost conceded inside the opening minutes when Mahdi Humaidan intercepted a loose back pass and charged into the penalty area. His cutback found Mohammed Qasim, whose fierce strike rattled the crossbar, giving Goa an early warning of the visitors’ attacking intent.
Al Zawraa break the deadlock
Goa managed to regain control in midfield but fell behind just before the break. Reziq Banihani latched onto a loose ball and slotted home in the 44th minute, silencing the local crowd and handing the Iraqis the advantage at half-time.
Injury-time strike seals it
The second half saw Goa push forward in search of an equaliser, with chances falling to Carlos Martinez and Noah Sadaoui. However, their efforts were denied by Al Zawraa’s resolute defence and sharp goalkeeping. In stoppage time, Nizar Alrashdan sealed the victory with a precise finish in the 95th minute, ending Goa’s hopes of a comeback.
Goa’s uphill task
The loss leaves FC Goa with work to do in the group stage as they chase qualification. Coach Manolo Marquez’s side will need to regroup quickly ahead of their next fixture to keep their knockout hopes alive.
