Game-Changer for Indian Hockey: ₹25,000 Monthly Allowance Announced for National Camp Players

In a landmark decision that could redefine grassroots support for Indian hockey, the Sports Ministry has approved a ₹25,000 monthly out-of-pocket allowance for 80 elite players training in national camps. This fresh push under the Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS) is aimed at strengthening the foundation of India’s most iconic team sport.

Supporting the Stars of Tomorrow

A total of 40 men and 40 women players from the “development group” of Hockey India will receive the allowance. While core group athletes already receive ₹50,000 per month, this move extends meaningful financial aid to those knocking on the doors of the senior team.

This allowance is more than just money—it’s a recognition of promise, potential, and relentless effort on the training pitch. With the men’s team winning Olympic bronze in Tokyo and the women scripting history with a top-four finish, the hunger for more podium finishes is stronger than ever.

A Strategic Investment in Talent

Each month, Hockey India will submit updated player lists based on form and fitness. This ensures accountability, while also giving emerging players something solid to strive for. The funds, amounting to around ₹20 lakh monthly, reflect a well-targeted investment into future champions.

Beyond hockey, the Mission Olympic Cell also cleared financial proposals worth over ₹4 crore for para-athletics, tennis training, and athlete support tools—including a mobile app for tracking development. But the hockey allowance stands out as a decisive nod to the sport’s growing stature and potential.

Hockey’s Revival Gets a Boost

From near obscurity a decade ago to now being back in the Olympic spotlight, Indian hockey has been on a determined path of revival. This monthly stipend could prove crucial in easing the daily challenges faced by younger players and helping them stay focused entirely on performance.

The Takeaway

By extending financial support to developmental players, the ministry isn’t just funding preparation—it’s fuelling ambition. For Indian hockey, this could well be the push that transforms potential into podium finishes, and hopefuls into heroes.
