LONDON, ENGLAND — Polish goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski has rejoined West Ham United on a one-year deal, just months after leaving the club as a free agent. The 40-year-old, who made over 200 appearances during his seven-year spell with the London side, has been brought back to provide an experienced option in goal following a recent player departure.
The Perfect Fit for the Role
West Ham coach Graham Potter confirmed the signing, expressing his satisfaction with the veteran’s return. In a statement to Sky Sports, Potter said the decision was based on more than just familiarity. “Regardless of him being here previously, the main factor is that he is still a top goalkeeper and a top professional, and the perfect choice for the role we needed to fill.”
Potter also highlighted Fabianski’s character and his value to the squad. “It’s a signing that makes perfect sense for everyone. Lukasz knows the club extremely well, is very well respected and popular among everyone here. His personality and character will be a great example, especially to our younger players,” he added.
A Return in a Time of Need
Fabianski was one of several senior players released by the club when their contracts expired at the end of the 2024-25 season. However, West Ham’s plans changed when goalkeeper Wes Foderingham departed for Aris Limassol, leaving the club with only two senior goalkeepers in Mads Hermansen and Alphonse Areola. Fabianski’s return comes as a welcome relief for the team, which has struggled defensively this season, having conceded a league-high eight goals. The club currently sits in 16th place in the standings and will look to turn its fortunes around in Saturday’s London derby against Tottenham Hotspur.
