Bhubaneswar : On September 7, 2025, England delivered an unforgettable performance in the third and final ODI against South Africa at Southampton—securing a 342-run victory, the largest winning margin by runs in men’s One Day International (ODI) cricket history .
After the series had already been decided in South Africa’s favor (2–1), England came out all guns blazing. They posted a colossal 414/5 in 50 overs, driven by commanding centuries from Jacob Bethell (110 off 82 balls) —his maiden professional hundred— and Joe Root (100 off 96 balls). An impressive opening knock of 62 from Jamie Smith further bolstered the innings .
In reply, South Africa faltered spectacularly, being bundled out for just 72 runs in just over 20 overs. Jofra Archer spearheaded the bowling attack with a fiery spell of 4/18, while Adil Rashid added 3/13 to complete the dismantling. South Africa’s captain Temba Bavuma was unable to bat due to a calf strain, compounding the visitors’ woes .
This win not only shattered the previous record held by India—who won by 317 runs in 2023—but also etched England’s name at the top of ODI record books .
Despite the emphatic win, South Africa had already claimed the series, marking their first ODI series victory in England since 1998 . The result, though symbolic, provided England with a psychological boost heading into the upcoming T20I series, which kicks off in Cardiff on Wednesday .
