Hisor, Tajikistan: Riding high on a morale-boosting 2-1 win over hosts Tajikistan, the Indian men’s national football team is preparing for its toughest challenge yet as they face Asian powerhouse Iran in their second Group B match of the CAFA Nations Cup 2025.

India Build Confidence After Tajikistan Triumph

India’s opening win was marked by a commanding defensive display and a crucial goal from veteran defender Sandesh Jhingan, who was named Player of the Match. The victory not only secured three vital points but also gave the Blue Tigers belief as they set their sights on another AFC Asian Cup qualification.

Iran Present A Daunting Test

Iran, ranked 20th in the world, enter the contest as overwhelming favorites. The teams have met six times previously, with India’s last victory coming back in 1959. Their most recent clash, in 2016, ended in a 4-0 defeat for India in Tehran. This historical record underlines the scale of the challenge India faces.

Leadership From Veterans

Among the current squad, only Jhingan, goalkeeper Gurpreet Singh Sandhu, and winger Udanta Singh remain from the team that faced Iran nine years ago. Sandhu emphasized tactical discipline, urging his teammates to limit errors and remain sharp, noting Iran’s ability to punish mistakes quickly.

Belief And Unity As Driving Forces

Despite being the underdogs, India’s experienced core remains optimistic. Sandhu spoke of the need for mental strength and unity, referencing historic football upsets as proof that determination can overturn the odds. “We have to stick to our strategy, fight for every ball, and believe we can get something out of this game,” he said.

What’s Next

The match against Iran will be a defining moment in Group B, with India eyeing a result that could edge them closer to a top finish. After this fixture, the Blue Tigers will round off their group stage with a clash against Afghanistan.
