Premier League legend James Milner etched his name into the competition’s history books by becoming the second-oldest goalscorer ever. The 39-year-old scored Brighton & Hove Albion’s equaliser against Manchester City on Sunday. Matchday 3 of the Premier League 2025/26 season saw Milner, at the age of 39 years and 239 days, converting a penalty kick in the 67th minute of the match.
Brighton, who had gone behind via a goal from Erling Haaland in the 1st half, went on to win the match 2-1 in the end. Milner scored from the spot after after Matheus Nunes made a handball inside the box. Milner, who celebrated the goal against his former club by honouring his ex Liverpool teammate Diogo Jota, had notably taken No. 20 shirt this season.
Thereafter, Brajan Gruda scored a goal late on in the 89th minute. The Seagulls were terrific in the 2nd half and were awarded rightly so.
It was a memorable night for Milner, who made his 640th Premier League appearance. The former Leeds United, Newcastle United, Aston Villa, Manchester City and Liverpool player scored his 56th career Premier League goal.
This was Brighton’s 1st win of the season from three matches (D1 L1). Man City suffered their 2nd successive defeat of the campaign after winning their season opener. They are placed 12th.
2nd-oldest goal-scorer in the Premier League
As per the Premier League, Teddy Sheringham holds the record for being the oldest goalscorer in Premier League history, having scored for West Ham United at 40 years and 268 days old. Sheringham got that goal against Portsmouth on December 26, 2006.
Milner at the age of 39 years and 239 days, is now the 2nd-oldest Premier League goalscorer.
He broke the record of Dean Windass, who was 39 years and 235 days when he scored for Hull City against Portsmouth in November 2008.
