Ahmedabad : Indian weightlifter Ajaya Babu Valluri made history at the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships 2025 in Ahmedabad by winning the gold medal in the men’s 79kg category. He lifted a combined total of 335 kilograms, including a championship record 152 kg in the snatch and 183 kg in the clean and jerk, narrowly defeating Malaysia’s Muhammad Erry who lifted 333 kg. This stellar performance not only earned Ajaya Babu the top podium spot but also secured his qualification for the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
The 30th edition of the championships saw over 300 lifters from 31 nations competing, with India showcasing dominance by topping the medal tally. Apart from Ajaya Babu’s triumph, other Indian medalists included Tokyo 2020 Olympic silver medallist Mirabai Chanu, who won gold in the women’s 48kg category, and Harjinder Kaur, who claimed bronze in the women’s 69kg category. India ended the event with an impressive haul of 13 senior medals — 4 gold, 6 silver, and 3 bronze.
Ajaya Babu’s victory is a significant boost to Indian weightlifting, highlighting the country’s rising talent on the international stage and building strong momentum ahead of the upcoming Commonwealth Games.
