Nagaland marked National Sports Day by honouring 151 athletes who have excelled at regional, national, and international levels. The state also announced plans for a new sports policy aligned with Khelo Bharat Niti 2025, aimed at strengthening the sporting ecosystem.
Policy for Future Growth
Speaking at the event, Advisor for Youth Resources and Sports S Keoshu Yimkhiung said the upcoming policy would address the needs of athletes and provide a structured framework for sports development. He highlighted that infrastructure projects are underway across all 17 districts, including stadiums and futsal courts, with more facilities in the pipeline.
Remembering Dhyan Chand
Yimkhiung extended greetings to the athletes and reminded the gathering that National Sports Day coincides with the birth anniversary of hockey legend Major Dhyan Chand, whose legacy continues to inspire players across the country.
Police Support for Athletes
Nagaland Director General of Police Rupin Sharma acknowledged both the passion and struggles of athletes in the state. He noted challenges such as limited career spans and lack of private sponsorships. To support them, Sharma announced that upcoming police recruitment drives would give preference to qualified sportspersons.
Call for Collaboration
Emphasizing long-term sustainability, Sharma urged government departments, private stakeholders, and CSR initiatives to work together. He suggested integrating athletes as coaches, referees, and trainers, ensuring they remain active contributors to Nagaland’s sporting culture even after their competitive careers.
