Bhubaneshwar- The story of Afghanistan cricket is a testament to resilience, hope, and an unyielding passion for the game. From a team playing in the lower divisions of the ICC to becoming a world-beater in white-ball cricket, their journey has been nothing short of phenomenal. As former Pakistan captain Rashid Latif, who coached Afghanistan in 2010, recalls an anecdote, it perfectly captures the team’s spirit. “Mirwais Ashraf… emerged from a fallen aircraft (an American). He came out and said: ‘Rashid bhai, apna dressing room.’ And he laughed,” Latif told TimesofIndia.com.

“There is a will of not giving up and to keep smiling no matter what the situation is, and that’s why they have become a world-beater in the white-ball format,” Latif added. This spirit, born in a war-torn country, has propelled them to become the second-best white-ball team in Asia, just behind India.

T20 World Cup 2016: The Promise of Greatness

Afghanistan first truly caught the world’s attention during the 2016 T20 World Cup. Following a historic victory over Scotland in the 2015 ODI World Cup, the Afghans were no longer content with just winning hearts. Captain Asghar Stanikzai famously declared his team would soon be a serious threat. His prophecy was immediately fulfilled as they stunned the eventual champions, West Indies, by six runs. “I think we have had enough of winning the hearts of cricket fans. This time we won the match,” Mohammad Nabi said after the game.

ODI World Cup 2019: Pushing the Giants

By the 2019 ODI World Cup, Afghanistan had transformed into a tricky opponent. Although they finished the tournament winless, they pushed giants like India and Pakistan to the brink in low-scoring thrillers. The close losses were a statement that they were no longer an underdog to be taken lightly; they were a force to be reckoned with.

ODI World Cup 2023: The Breakthrough Moment

The 2023 ODI World Cup marked Afghanistan’s most successful campaign yet. Under the calm guidance of head coach Jonathan Trott, the team turned their passion into consistent victories. They secured four out of nine games, with three of those wins coming against heavyweights England, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka. Their victory against Pakistan was a historic moment, as they completed their highest-ever successful chase in ODIs. Had it not been for a few critical moments, they could have even reached the semifinals. They finished sixth, ahead of England, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka.

T20 World Cup 2024: The Dream Run

If the 2023 World Cup was a statement, the 2024 T20 World Cup was Afghanistan’s dream run. The team silenced any doubts about their talent and temperament, proving they came to win. They stormed into the semifinals, getting the better of Uganda, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, and, most notably, mighty Australia, finally “exorcising the ghosts of Wankhede 2023.” While they fell to South Africa in the semifinals, they proved they came with both heart and high-level skills. Their five wins in the tournament were far superior to the performances of regional rivals like Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and Pakistan, who failed to even reach the Super Eights.

Champions Trophy 2025: Staying Ahead

In the 2025 Champions Trophy, drawn in a tough group with South Africa, England, and Australia, Afghanistan once again proved their mettle. Despite not advancing to the semifinals, they secured a crucial victory against England and once again finished ahead of regional rivals. Hosts Pakistan and Bangladesh went winless, while Sri Lanka didn’t even qualify for the tournament.

The rise of Afghanistan is arguably the greatest storyline in the last decade of world cricket. For a team that started its journey in refugee camps, their progress has been faster than Pakistan’s inconsistencies and more significant than Bangladesh’s fading promise. Though they still have areas to improve, particularly in their batting and fielding, cricket has become a uniting force for a nation in search of heroes, giving millions of Afghans a reason to dream.
