Owings Mills, Maryland – World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler showcased his championship mettle on Sunday, overcoming a shaky back nine to defeat Scotland’s Robert MacIntyre by two strokes at the BMW Championship. Scheffler’s final-round 3-under-par 67 brought his total to 15-under 265 at Caves Valley Golf Club, securing his 18th PGA Tour victory since February 2022.
MacIntyre’s Lead Evaporates as Scheffler Seizes Control
Robert MacIntyre, who had held the sole lead after each of the first three rounds in the second leg of the FedEx Cup playoffs, struggled mightily on Sunday with a 3-over 73. His four-shot overnight lead quickly dissolved as Scheffler took command early in the round.
Key Moments of the Final Round:
- Early Swing: The very first hole set the tone, with a crucial two-shot swing. Scheffler executed a perfect birdie, while MacIntyre faltered, missing both the fairway and the green, leading to a bogey.
- MacIntyre’s Woes: MacIntyre’s unraveling continued as he bogeyed three of his first five holes. He missed greens in regulation at Nos. 2 and 5, failing to save par.
- Scheffler Takes the Lead: This allowed Scheffler to draw level at 13 under. Two holes later, Scheffler sank a 6-foot birdie putt, securing the outright lead and never looking back.
- Scheffler’s Steady Play: Scheffler continued to build momentum, sticking his approach at the 11th to three feet for an easy birdie. Although his putter led to bogeys at Nos. 12 and 14 from close range, MacIntyre also dropped a shot after missing the green at the par-3 13th, preventing the Scot from closing the gap.
- The Decisive Pitch-In: The most dramatic moment came at the difficult par-3 17th. After both players missed the green, Scheffler executed a masterful pitch shot that took a full 12 seconds to trickle down the length of the green and directly into the hole for a pivotal birdie. This incredible shot effectively sealed his victory.
Final Standings and Outlook for the Tour Championship
Scheffler’s closing birdie at 17 gave him the cushion needed to secure the win. Maverick McNealy had a bogey-free 66 to finish third at 11 under, while Englishman Tommy Fleetwood (67) and Sam Burns (68) tied for fourth at 10 under.
At 29, Scheffler has now amassed 18 PGA Tour victories in a remarkably short span. He now heads to the Tour Championship next week in Atlanta as the heavy favorite to repeat his success, carrying immense momentum from his Cincinnati triumph.
