Former Chelsea defender Filipe Luis has been dismissed as manager of Flamengo just hours after the Brazilian giants stormed into the Campeonato Carioca final with an emphatic 8-0 victory over Madureira.
The 40-year-old departs despite overseeing an 11-0 aggregate triumph in the semi-final and guiding the club to seven trophies in just 100 matches since taking charge in September 2024. Flamengo confirmed his exit shortly before 01:00 local time, ending a tenure that delivered silverware but also recent disappointment.
Luis, who won the Premier League title with Chelsea under Jose Mourinho in 2015, had averaged a trophy every 14 games in charge. Yet successive final defeats in 2026 — in the Supercopa do Brasil and Recopa Sudamericana — appear to have weighed heavily in the club’s decision.
Flamengo will now prepare for Sunday’s Carioca final against Fluminense without the man who restored continental glory to the Maracana.
Silverware But Sudden End
Luis’ managerial rise was swift. After coaching Flamengo’s Under-17 and Under-20 sides to league titles, he stepped up to the senior role and quickly delivered major honours. The pinnacle came in 2025 when he guided the club to Copa Libertadores success, becoming only the ninth individual to win the competition both as a player and a coach.
He had previously lifted the Libertadores twice as a player with Flamengo, in 2019 and 2022, cementing his legacy at the club. Domestic success followed under his leadership, including Serie A, Copa do Brasil, Campeonato Carioca and Supercopa do Brasil titles, alongside international honours such as the Fifa Challenger Cup and Fifa Derby of the Americas.
Despite the heavy semi-final win over Madureira, Flamengo’s hierarchy acted decisively. In a brief statement, the club confirmed that assistant coach Ivan Palanco and physical trainer Diogo Linhares would also leave alongside Luis, thanking the former defender for his contribution and wishing him well.
Pressure of Expectations
Flamengo’s campaign has been mixed beyond cup competitions. The club reached the last 16 of the Fifa Club World Cup last summer, losing 4-2 to Bayern Munich after topping their group ahead of Chelsea. However, league form this season has been inconsistent, with one win, one draw and one defeat from their opening three matches leaving them 11th in the table.
They trail leaders Palmeiras by six points, albeit with a game in hand. For a club accustomed to dominance, such inconsistency has amplified scrutiny.
The timing of Luis’ departure — immediately after one of Flamengo’s biggest wins of the season — underlines the relentless pressure at Brazil’s most decorated club. Silverware may buy credit, but it does not guarantee security.
