Nine-year-old Aarit Kapil from Delhi recently made headlines by nearly defeating reigning world No. 1 Magnus Carlsen in the ‘Early Titled Tuesday’ online chess tournament.
Aarit, who was the runner-up in the recent Under-9 National Championship, played an exceptional game against the five-time world champion. He managed to put Carlsen in a completely lost position. However, with very little time left on his clock, Aarit was unable to convert his advantage and the game ended in a draw, specifically a rook versus two minor pieces endgame.
Aarit played in this event from his hotel in Georgia, where he’s currently competing in the Under-10 World Championship. He’s had a strong start in that tournament, winning his first two rounds and preparing for his third game on Wednesday.
In the same ‘Early Titled Tuesday’ tournament, India’s V Pranav emerged as the winner, scoring an impressive 10 out of 11 points. American Grandmaster Hans Moke Niemann and Carlsen both finished with 9.5 points, with Niemann securing second place on a tiebreak.
