Mumbai : In a major boost to India’s preparations for the upcoming Asia Cup, pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah has informed the national selectors that he is available for the continental tournament starting September 9 in the UAE.
The senior selection committee, headed by Ajit Agarkar, is scheduled to meet in Mumbai on August 19 to finalise the 15-member squad for the Asia Cup, which will be played in the T20 format.
Workload Management Behind His Test Absence
Bumrah was recently released from the squad ahead of the fifth Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy at The Oval to manage his workload. The right-arm fast bowler had already featured in three of the five matches, bowling close to 120 overs and claiming two five-wicket hauls. His absence from the final Test was seen as a precautionary measure to ensure he remained fit for the upcoming white-ball assignments.
Format And Recovery Period Favour His Return
The T20 format of the Asia Cup is expected to ease the physical load on Bumrah compared to the demands of Test cricket. Furthermore, the gap of nearly 40 days between his last outing in England and the start of the tournament has given him enough time to recover and prepare.
First T20I Appearance Since World Cup Final
If selected, the Asia Cup will mark Bumrah’s first T20 international since the 2024 T20 World Cup final, where he played a decisive role in India’s triumph over South Africa. His spell of 2 for 18 in that match showcased his value in high-pressure situations.
Early Departure To UAE On The Cards
With limited match practice before the Asia Cup, the team management is considering an early departure to the UAE. The idea is to allow the players to acclimatize to conditions in Dubai and Abu Dhabi rather than assembling for a brief preparatory camp in Bengaluru.
Crucial Boost Ahead Of Busy Season
Bumrah’s availability will come as a relief for the team management as India look to balance pace resources ahead of a packed cricket calendar. His return is set to strengthen the bowling unit in conditions where experience and precision with the ball will be key.
