Evenepoel Dominates Tour de France Time Trial: Here’s How

Caen, France – Belgian cycling sensation Remco Evenepoel showcased his time trial mastery on Wednesday, clinching the fifth stage of the Tour de France. The 33km individual time trial around Caen saw Slovenian star Tadej Pogacar seize the coveted yellow jersey, taking it from Dutchman Mathieu van der Poel.

Evenepoel, the reigning World and Olympic champion in the discipline, completed the course in a blistering 36 minutes and 42 seconds, maintaining an average speed of 54 km/h. His dominant performance put him 16 seconds ahead of Pogacar, with Italy’s Edoardo Affini securing third place, 33 seconds off Evenepoel’s pace.

Pogacar Ascends to General Classification Lead

With his strong second-place finish in the time trial, Tadej Pogacar now leads the overall general classification. He holds a significant 42-second advantage over Evenepoel, who celebrated his second career stage win at the Tour de France. Evenepoel’s previous Tour stage victory also came in a time trial, during his debut in the Grande Boucle last year in Gevrey-Chambertin.

Struggles for Van der Poel and Vingegaard

The day proved challenging for some of the pre-stage favorites. Two-time Tour de France winner Jonas Vingegaard had a disappointing outing, finishing 13th in the stage, a full 1 minute and 21 seconds behind Evenepoel. This performance caused the Dane to slip to fourth place overall, now 1 minute and 13 seconds behind the new yellow jersey holder, Pogacar. Local rider Kevin Vauquelin, with an impressive fifth-place finish on the day, moved up to third in the general classification.

Yellow jersey wearer Mathieu van der Poel also struggled to maintain the demanding pace, finishing 18th, 1 minute and 44 seconds adrift of Evenepoel. This result saw the Dutchman drop to sixth place in the overall standings.

Evenepoel’s Unrivaled Time Trial Prowess

Evenepoel entered the stage as the overwhelming favorite, a testament to his exceptional record in time trials. The Flemish rider, often seen sporting his distinctive golden helmet as a symbol of his Olympic double, has proven virtually invincible in this discipline. He has now won his last six time trial stages and an astonishing nine out of twelve since the beginning of 2024. This stage victory marks his 64th career win, with 21 of those coming in time trials, solidifying his reputation as a true specialist.
