Luka Modrić Departs From Real Madrid: A Legacy of 28 Trophies and Unparalleled Midfield Mastery

Madrid, Spain – After an illustrious 13-year tenure that redefined midfield artistry and brought unprecedented success, Luka Modrić has officially bid farewell to Real Madrid. The Croatian maestro played his final match for the club on July 9, 2025, in the FIFA Club World Cup semi-final, marking the end of an unforgettable era before his anticipated move to AC Milan.

From Unsung Hero to Midfield Maestro

Luka Modrić arrived at Real Madrid in August 2012 from Tottenham Hotspur, initially facing skepticism from some quarters. However, his quiet dedication, tireless work rate, and exquisite technical ability quickly transformed him into an indispensable figure in the heart of Los Blancos’ midfield. He became the vital cog in a system that would go on to dominate European football, forming a legendary partnership with Toni Kroos and Casemiro that dictated the tempo of countless matches.

Modrić’s journey was one of consistent evolution, from an elegant deep-lying playmaker to a dynamic box-to-box presence capable of unlocking defenses with a single pass or orchestrating intricate attacking moves. His vision, press resistance, and uncanny ability to control the flow of the game earned him the moniker “El Padrino” (The Godfather) among fans, encapsulating his profound influence on the pitch.

An Unparalleled Trophy Haul

During his 13 seasons at the Santiago Bernabéu, Modrić amassed an astonishing collection of silverware, making him the most decorated player in Real Madrid’s storied history with a record 28 major trophies. His incredible haul includes:

  • 6 UEFA Champions League titles (2014, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2022, 2024)
  • 6 FIFA Club World Cups
  • 5 UEFA Super Cups
  • 4 La Liga titles
  • 2 Copa del Rey titles
  • 5 Spanish Super Cups
  • 1 FIFA Intercontinental Cup (2025)

His pivotal role in the historic “three-peat” of Champions League titles from 2016 to 2018, and the sixth Champions League title, cemented his status as a true legend of the competition.

Individual Brilliance and Global Recognition

Beyond team accolades, Modrić’s individual brilliance received global recognition. In 2018, he achieved the remarkable feat of breaking the decade-long duopoly of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo by winning the coveted Ballon d’Or. This came after a spectacular year where he not only led Real Madrid to their third consecutive Champions League title but also captained Croatia to a historic FIFA World Cup final, earning the Golden Ball as the tournament’s best player.

His individual honors also include:

  • FIFA The Best Men’s Player (2018)
  • UEFA Men’s Player of the Year (2018)
  • Multiple inclusions in the FIFA FIFPro World XI
  • A World Cup third-place finish with Croatia in 2022

Having made nearly 600 appearances for Real Madrid across all competitions, Luka Modrić departs as an icon of consistency, class, and quiet leadership. While his final appearance for the club ended in a bittersweet defeat in the Club World Cup semi-final, his legacy is etched forever in the annals of Real Madrid and world football. He leaves behind an indelible mark, revered not just for his trophies, but for the elegance, intelligence, and unwavering spirit he brought to every game.
