EUGENE, OREGON – Kenyan running sensation Faith Kipyegon, 31, has once again rewritten the record books, setting a new world record in the 1500 meters at the Prefontaine Classic on Saturday. The three-time Olympic champion in the event finished with an astonishing time of 3 minutes, 48.68 seconds, surpassing her previous record of 3:49.04, which she established last July ahead of the Paris Games.
Kipyegon dominated the race, sprinting solo in the final stretch to the roar of a sold-out crowd at Hayward Field. After crossing the finish line, she proudly draped herself in the Kenyan flag.
Other Top Finishers
Ethiopia’s Diribe Welteji secured second place with a time of 3:51.44. Australian Jessica Hull, who earned a silver medal behind Kipyegon at last year’s Olympics, finished third in 3:52.67.
Recent Mile Attempt and Other Achievements
Last month, Kipyegon made an attempt to become the first woman in history to run a mile in under four minutes. While she ran an incredibly fast 4:06.42 at Stade Charlety in Paris, a time faster than her official world record of 4:07.64, it will not be recognized as a new record due to the Nike-sponsored event being unofficial.
Kipyegon’s impressive career also includes winning the 1500 meters at the last three World Championships. Additionally, she secured a silver medal in the 5000 meters at the Paris Olympics last summer.
