The football community is mourning the tragic loss of Diogo Jota, 28, and his brother, André Silva, 25, who both died in a car crash in Spain early on Thursday morning. Both brothers were professional footballers.
A funeral service was held in Gondomar, Portugal, on Saturday. Jota’s wife, Rute Cardoso, with whom he has three young children, was present and seen embracing other mourners. The couple had been married for less than two weeks before the accident.
Several of Jota’s former Liverpool teammates attended to pay their respects. Virgil van Dijk and Andy Robertson led the tributes from the club, carrying red flowers shaped like the brothers’ jerseys. They were joined by Alexis Mac Allister, Darwin Núñez, Ibrahima Konaté, and the team’s manager, Arne Slot, along with CEO Michael Edwards.
During the service, bells rang as a procession of mourners accompanied the brothers’ coffins into the church. Among the pallbearers was Portugal star Rúben Neves, who had played with Jota for both the national team and Wolverhampton Wanderers. A photograph of André Silva, bearing the inscription “Para Sempre Um De Nos” (“Forever One Of Us”), was carried in front of the coffins.
