A tense day at the Mallorca Open on Thursday saw Corentin Moutet and Tallon Griekspoor secure their spots in the semifinals.
Moutet’s Fiery Victory
France’s Corentin Moutet defeated American Learner Tien 6-2, 7-5 in a match that had its share of drama. Moutet dominated the first set, but the start of the second brought a heated argument between the Frenchman and the chair umpire. The dispute arose over a point awarded to Tien after Moutet fell into the net before the ball’s second bounce. Moutet vehemently protested the call and initially refused to continue the match. He returned visibly frustrated, even smashing rackets in anger. Despite this fiery setback, he managed to regain his composure and ultimately clinched the win, earning his first-ever grass-court semifinal berth.
Griekspoor Cruises, Auger-Aliassime Fights Back
Dutch fourth seed Tallon Griekspoor, who had to withdraw from the French Open due to an abdominal injury, showed no ill effects as he comfortably beat Canadian sixth seed Gabriel Diallo 6-4, 6-4. Griekspoor controlled the match, securing an early break in the second set to seal his victory. He’ll now face Canadian second seed Felix Auger-Aliassime.
Auger-Aliassime had a tougher path to the semifinals. He was outplayed in the first set against Serbian Hamad Medjedovic but staged a strong comeback, securing a 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 win to reach the last four.
Spanish Hopes Dashed
Local favorite and seventh seed Roberto Bautista Agut couldn’t quite make it through, as his Spanish hopes were dashed. He fell 6-4, 7-6(4) to Michelsen in a tight quarterfinal match.
