Bangladesh Qualifies for Maiden AFC Women’s Asian Cup

Yangon : Bangladesh has scripted a remarkable chapter in its sporting history by qualifying for the AFC Women’s Asian Cup for the first time ever. The national team achieved this landmark by defeating Myanmar 2-1 in Yangon, a result that sealed top spot in Group C of the qualifiers.

The match was defined by the brilliance of 21-year-old forward Ritu Porna Chakma, who scored both goals in a performance that will be remembered for years. She opened the scoring midway through the first half, capitalizing on defensive confusion to slot home calmly. Although Myanmar struck back early in the second half to level the contest, Chakma struck again with a composed finish that ultimately secured Bangladesh’s passage to the continental championship.

This qualification is more than just a sporting milestone—it is a testament to years of quiet progress in women’s football in Bangladesh. Once an afterthought in the region, the team has been steadily rising since their breakthrough triumph at the SAFF Women’s Championship in 2022. The victory over Myanmar not only highlights their growth but also sends a message to the rest of Asia that Bangladesh’s women are ready to compete at the highest level.

The AFC Women’s Asian Cup, scheduled for 2026 in Australia, will feature the continent’s strongest sides, including Japan, China, South Korea, and the hosts. For Bangladesh, this historic achievement offers a chance to showcase their talent and inspire a new generation of girls to believe in the power of sport.
