World Championship gold medallist javelin thrower Anderson Peters has withdrawn from the upcoming Neeraj Chopra Classic citing an ankle injury. The Grenadian star, who is a two-time world champion, sustained the injury during the Ostrava Golden Spike meet held on June 24, where he managed a throw of 83.63 meters to finish third.Peters was expected to be one of the biggest attractions at the event, scheduled for July 5 at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium in Bengaluru. His participation would have set up a high-profile showdown with Olympic and world champion Neeraj Chopra.Organizers announced that Peters will be replaced by Poland’s Cyprian Mrzygłód, who is a former European Under-23 champion and has a personal best of over 85 meters. This is not the only setback for the meet. India’s Kishore Jena, who won silver at the Asian Games, has also pulled out due to an ankle problem. He has been replaced by Yash Vir Singh, who recently achieved a personal best of 82.57 meters.Despite these withdrawals, the Neeraj Chopra Classic still features a strong field including Germany’s 2016 Olympic champion Thomas Röhler, Kenya’s Julius Yego, American Curtis Thompson, Brazil’s Luiz Mauricio da Silva, and several top Indian throwers.
The Neeraj Chopra Classic is India’s first major international javelin event and is part of the World Athletics Continental Tour Gold series. The competition serves as both a qualifier for the World Championships and a critical tune-up for the Paris Olympics later this year.Organizers expressed regret over Peters’ absence but wished him a speedy recovery. Fans will still have the chance to witness several elite throwers compete in what promises to be an exciting contest.
