In a significant step towards assembling a strong contingent for the upcoming 39th National Games, the Meghalaya Athletics Association organised its first selection trial at the SAI Training Centre in Shillong. The trials, held over the weekend, witnessed enthusiastic participation from athletes representing various districts of the state.With the National Games scheduled to be hosted by Meghalaya later this year, the event carries added importance. Athletes competed in multiple track and field disciplines, including sprints, middle-distance races, long jump, shot put, and javelin throw. Officials noted that this initial trial aimed to identify promising talent early and offer them systematic coaching ahead of the Games.Association president Kennedy Khyriem, who inaugurated the trials, highlighted the historic opportunity for local athletes to represent Meghalaya on home soil. “The National Games will be a milestone event for our state. We want to ensure our athletes are fully prepared to make a mark,” Khyriem said.Technical officials and coaches closely monitored performances and recorded timings and measurements with electronic equipment to maintain transparency. Several young athletes showed considerable promise, especially in the sprint and throwing events, and are likely to be included in the preliminary squad.
Speaking to the media, the association’s secretary, Finely Pariat, stressed that this was only the first phase of selections. More trials will be conducted over the coming months to give athletes additional chances to qualify and improve their performance standards. The shortlisted athletes will also undergo fitness assessments and specialized training camps.The 39th National Games are expected to draw thousands of participants from across the country and will be the biggest multi-sport event ever hosted in Meghalaya. With the preparations gaining momentum, the Athletics Association is determined to ensure the host state fields a competitive team across all athletics disciplines.Overall, the inaugural trial served as a promising start to Meghalaya’s campaign, blending grassroots participation with a renewed focus on high-performance training.
