Australia’s Minjee Lee battled through a challenging final round, carding a two-over-par 74 to win the Women’s PGA Championship on Sunday. This victory, her third major title, saw her triumph by three strokes on a demanding day at Fields Ranch East in Frisco, Texas.
The 29-year-old from Perth finished with a total of four-under-par 284. This adds to her impressive major championship resume, which already includes the 2021 Evian Championship and the 2022 US Women’s Open. Americans Auston Kim and Thailand’s Chanettee Wannasaen tied for second place at one-under 287.
Lee’s Gritty Final Round
Lee’s final round was a display of resilience. She secured her first birdie of the day on the par-five ninth, following a precise chip to within two feet of the hole. Despite a bogey on the 10th, she regained momentum by sinking a crucial nine-foot par putt on the 13th. She then extended her lead with a ine-foot birdie putt on the 14th and another five-and-a-half-foot birdie putt on the 15th, maintaining control despite a final bogey on the 16th.
Throughout the round, Lee remained focused despite the hot and windy conditions, keeping an eye on her closest competitors while concentrating on her own game.
Kim’s Pressure and Other Challengers
Twenty-four-year-old Auston Kim, ranked 98th in the world and seeking her maiden LPGA victory, put up a strong fight. After an opening birdie on the par-five first, she rattled off three consecutive birdies from the seventh through the ninth holes, including a remarkable tee shot on the par-three eighth that landed just a foot from the pin.
Ultimately, Lee’s experience and steady play proved too strong for the chasing pack, solidifying her status as one of golf’s elite.
