In a gripping conclusion to their FIH Pro League 2024–25 campaign, the Indian men’s hockey team defeated Belgium 4–3 in a fiercely contested match in Antwerp on Sunday. It was a much-needed morale boost for the side, which had been struggling through a tough European leg of the tournament.
India came into the match with seven consecutive losses, but showed impressive grit and character to turn the tide against the world No. 2 side. This victory also avenged their earlier 1–4 defeat to Belgium in the same phase of the competition.
Early Setback, Steady Recovery
Belgium looked in control early on, as Arthur de Sloover found the net in the eighth minute, giving the hosts a 1–0 lead. The Red Lions dominated possession in the first quarter, putting pressure on the Indian defence.
However, India responded swiftly through Sukhjeet Singh, who equalised off a penalty corner in the second quarter. Belgium regained the lead in the third, with Nicolas Stockbroekx making it 2–1 after a clever move inside the circle.
India Turns the Tables
The momentum began to shift in India’s favour midway through the third quarter. Sukhjeet struck again, this time from open play, to level the scores. A few minutes later, Amit Rohidas converted a well-earned penalty corner to hand India a 3–2 lead.
Just when it seemed India might pull away, Belgium’s Thibeau Labouchere, making his senior debut, scored a fine goal to bring the scores back to 3–3 in the final quarter.
Sealing the Victory
The match seemed destined for a draw until the 58th minute, when India’s circle penetration led to a penalty stroke after a successful video referral. Captain Harmanpreet Singh stepped up under pressure and made no mistake, slotting the ball past the Belgian goalkeeper to reclaim the lead.
India defended the final minutes with determination and composure, securing a dramatic and morale-lifting 4–3 win.
A Positive Finish to a Tough Tour
While India’s overall campaign saw them struggle in consistency and results—especially in the European leg—this victory against a top-ranked side sends a strong message. It showcased India’s depth, fighting spirit, and tactical adaptability.
With the Pro League phase behind them, the Indian team will now shift its focus to preparing for the Paris Olympics and upcoming international fixtures. This hard-earned win, against a formidable opponent on their home turf, might just be the spark they needed.
