Brazilian teenager Joao Fonseca has earned his first tour-level victory on grass, defeating Zizou Bergs 6-7(8), 6-0, 6-3 to advance to the second round at Eastbourne.
The 18-year-old qualifier, who previously achieved his biggest career win by upsetting then-world No. 9 Andrey Rublev at the Australian Open earlier this year, is now set to face defending champion Taylor Fritz in the next round.
The match saw a tight first set go to a tie-break, which Bergs ultimately won despite Fonseca fending off both break points he faced. However, Fonseca responded emphatically by bageling Bergs 6-0 in the second set to level the match. In the decisive third set, Fonseca quickly built a 3-0 lead. Although Bergs managed to break back, Fonseca immediately restored his advantage, eventually sealing the win with a confident hold to love.
